Major flooding hits Valdosta, south Georgia

ATLANTA — More than a dozen homes are underwater in and around Valdosta and several neighborhoods are evacuated as major flooding hits south Georgia after heavy rain this week.

Valdosta officials are building sand bag and gravel barriers around the city's wastewater treatment plant to keep out rising water.

Swollen rivers and creeks have cut off several roads including U.S. Highway 84 between Valdosta and Quitman.

Several businesses and a YMCA have water in their buildings.

City police are warning gawkers to stay out of flooded neighborhoods and say they will issue tickets.

The National Weather Service says more rain could fall Sunday.

Gov. Sonny Perdue earlier declared a state of emergency in 10 south Georgia counties after severe weather.
