GCSU women slip by Saints 59-56

A second-half surge led by Shandrea Moore (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Georgia College & State University (15-5, 8-2 PBC) pushed the Bobcat women’s basketball past the North Georgia Saints (8-11, 3-7 PBC) 59-56 Wednesday in the Centennial Center.

Head coach John Carrick’s ‘Cats found themselves down 24-18 at halftime, marking only the third time his squad has trailed at the half in the Centennial Center this season.

Moore was a spark plug for the Bobcats in the second frame, scoring 13 of her 17 points, tying a season-high set against then-No. 20 Lenoir-Rhyne University in the season opener. The senior guard also set a career-high tonight with eight steals.

Chimere Jordan (Gray) and Dominique Huffin (Tucker) aided Georgia College’s scoring efforts by attributing 14 and 12 points, respectively. Jordan hit five field goals, nailed four three-pointers, grabbed five boards, all off the defensive glass, and had four assists. Huffin also snagged six caroms.

North Georgia matched with three scorers in double-digits and two players posting double-doubles. Whitney Randolph scored 16 points to go with 14 rebounds while Tiffany Marlow had 10 points and 10 boards. Meredith Montgomery helped her team with 11 points.

The Saints’ Janyce Ealey connected a free-throw to get a three-point play and get her team within three, 59-56 with under 10 seconds to play. On the following inbound, Montgomery stole the ball and North Georgia immediately called a timeout to set up a play. Ealey missed a three and the Bobcats’ Jordan grabbed a rebound off the rim to secure the victory for Georgia College.

The Bobcats outscored North Georgia 14-6 in points off turnovers. GCSU held the Saints to only hitting .328 (22-67) from the floor and the squad moves to 11-2 when holding opponents to under .400 shooting. Georgia College hit eight three-pointers and remains undefeated at 6-0 when they hit at least eight threes.

Georgia College is back in action at home Saturday, Feb. 6, at 1:30 p.m. against No. 15 Clayton State University. The Bobcats upset the Lakers 73-60 earlier in the season.
