MILLEDGEVILLE — GMC JC has the size, speed, talent and will to be a great football team this year. As a matter of fact, the Bulldogs have several positions that could be considered among the best in the nation.
The bottom line — the Bulldogs are full of viable weapons that can cut loose on a team at a moment’s notice. Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas is also a very physical and gifted football team, and like GMC JC, have a wall of special performers on defense that can take over a game at any time.
“It’s going to be a great challenge for our offensive line and our running backs. We are going to have to handle what they give us,” said GMC JC head coach Bert Williams Monday afternoon at the Bulldog’s practice. “They have a lot of talent on the line and have a very good linebacking corps as well.”
The Bulldogs held a game-tempo scrimmage Saturday afternoon at historic Davenport Field, and Williams stated Monday that the team had some bright spots, and that there was plenty to build on and smile about.
“The biggest thing we are doing is trying to finish up the final pieces of our game plan. We are getting ready for Navarro and we are making sure we are executing [the plays] the best way we can do it,” he said. “We are going to continue to work on our technique and fundamentals and get better every day.”
GMC JC sports several skill position players that have the quickness, speed and ball-handling ability to break a game wide open. Williams and his staff appears eager to see how some of these players, especially the younger ones, react in a hostile road environment.
“We’ve got some homerun hitters this year at running back and receiver. If we can open a crack, and protect long enough to get the ball out there to them, we can make things happen,” said Williams.
And make things happen GMC will do once they strap on their helmets and pads and suit up for a titanic battle that’s going to take place Saturday afternoon in Texas.
Saturday’s scrimmage revealed that areas of the team are starting to really come together.
“Defensively, we jelled together really well Saturday,” said Williams. “They played exceptionally well and didn’t really give up any big plays. They were consistent and they played hard football.”
The Bulldogs may have also found their answer at quarterback.
“Offensively, we had a couple of guys that stepped forward. Dylan Shaddix [from Henry County High School in McDonough] elevated himself to the starting quarterback position going into this game. He put us in the right place and made very few mistakes with his checks and all of that,” said Williams. “He’s got a little moxy to him, and he’s got some understanding of the game. He’s not a guy that can get out of trouble with his feet, but he’s a guy that’s smart enough to put you in the right play so he doesn’t have to use his feet.”
Williams said a few lineman also set themselves apart during Saturday’s scrimmage and a few newcomers are also barking for some playing time.
“Some of the guys that have normally been looking tough didn’t really have a good scrimmage. A couple of the freshman guys stepped forward and had a pretty darn good scrimmage — and they are challenging a couple of the older guys,” he said. “Sometimes some of those older guys think they have a lock on the position, but that’s not always the case.”
