JMA unblemished going into Homecoming

MILLEDGEVILLE — Covenant Academy fell victim to a perfect John Milledge Academy football storm. The Trojans dominated in all three phases, winning 56-0.

JMA scored 35 unanswered points with short time remaining in the second quarter last Friday. Senior quarterback Billy Whitlock entered the game to complete a successful two-minute drill offense.

Trojan head coach J.T. Wall said he looked good in relief of the hot handed Brantley Attaway. Along with sophomore Colby McCommon, Wall sees three capable quarterbacks.

“Billy came in knowing that’s the first time he ran the two minute drill. He is a student of the game that understands what is going on and why. We feel good depth wise,” Wall said.

Attaway showed well in short work. He was 6-for-7 for 108 yards and three touchdowns. The senior spread the ball to classmates Chris Sealey, Michael Lewis and Will Lovins.

Both tall, lanky receivers, Lewis and Lovins are Trojan veterans with leadership. They understand every wide receiver position.

None of the offensive starters carried too much load against Covenant. Senior tailback Cooper Morgan had single digit carries, which should bode well for long term durability.

“You are trying to stay healthy but at the same time stay fresh,” Wall said. “You don’t want to get stale and out of rhythm.”

JMA executed well despite the large lead last Friday. Wall wants consistency on all sides.

Small mistakes with big leads can fester down the line against tougher teams.

Defensively, Jesse Deariso and Heath McDonald tow the senior line. Hunter Harding and Andrew Hayes represent junior talent.

Wall calls Deariso the “heart and soul” of the team from a captain standpoint.

Junior Tommy Pittman continues performing well after switching positions allowing Hayes onto the d-line.

Tomorrow’s Homecoming game against Central Fellowship Christian Academy should provide a tougher test for JMA.

CFCA’s special teams scored 14 of their 21 total points last week. Wall needs the Trojan special teamers ready.

The visitors bring classic wishbone, Wing-T and some I-formation offense.

Central has a good receiver and a four or five look defense.

At 6-0, JMA wants to keep rolling through region.

“Obviously, the teams we played early were tougher. At the same time, we have to play who is on the schedule,” Wall said. “At this point of the year, we are focusing on what we can control.”

Homecoming against Central Fellowship kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
