MILLEDGEVILLE — This past weekend the JMA Trojans soccer team travelled to Hinesville for an exclusive tournament and came away victorious in all their matches to capture the big trophy.
The Trojans were led by the scoring barrage of senior Tyler Panfil, who went off on wolfman rampage on the soccer field and blasted five goals into the net.
“We ended up playing First Presbyterian Christian out of Hinesville (the host team). We then played Georgia Christian out of Valdosta for the championship,” said head coach Hal Haynes Wednesday afternoon at practice.
Game one versus FPC started out last Friday but was postponed due to an oncoming lightning threat. The game was stopped after 20 minutes of play.
“We ended up finishing Saturday morning, and immediately after that game we took on Georgia Christian. So we played back-to-back and won both games,” said Haynes.
The Trojans won 5-0 behind a fearsome defensive wall and the sharp net protection of sophomore goalie Davis Farr.
“Tyler Panfil had an outstanding game — a hat-trick plus one,” said Haynes.
Panfil’s scoring outburst in game one really fired up the team and kept the momentum rolling into game two. Star sophomore striker Brantley Attaway also added a goal in the first game to add to his season total. Attaway put on a clinic in soccer during the first week of the season and is an extra boost to the likes of Panfil.
In game two Panfil added another goal, and was accompanied with goals by Attaway and his little brother Brandon Panfil.
“We were without the services of Avery Denton, who is having a little hamstring problem. So, we are letting him mend to be ready this weekend,” said Haynes. “We’ll be playing Friday and Saturday at a tournament over at Central Fellowship in Macon. Our first game will be 5 p.m. Friday versus Trinity Christian.”
JMA is now 5-1 on the year.
“It’s a good start to the season,” said Haynes. “Both of those teams we played this past weekend was in our region. This weekend we’ll also be playing a team from South Carolina and a team from Alabama and a few teams here in Georgia. There will be eight teams in the tournament.”
