The GMC Prep boys put on a clinic in teamwork in their win over Prince Avenue (3-2) Tuesday, avenging an earlier loss by the score of 54-43.
“Tonight we took care of the basketball — we learned how to win and learned how to finish off a team,” said head coach Chris Barfield after the game.
After going down in the first quarter by a 13-10 score, the Bulldogs (1-2) would stifle the opponents in the second and outscore them 18-7 to go into the half with a 28-20 advantage.
The second quarter saw some great plays by GMC with the scoring being distributed all over. Will Parker stole the ball at one point under the basket and went coast to coast to score on a lay up and cut the lead to 17-16 — and that’s where the Wolverines would have their last lead of the night.
Parker and Nolan Baugh would then hit back-to-back 3-pointers that seemed to break the will of their opponent.
But then the play of the night occurred as Dustin Archebelle sent a rebounded pass to Baugh, who then passed to Parker, who hit an open Joseph McAllister for a 26-17 lead.
“We have been working hard on moving the ball and then hitting our open shots,” said Baugh after the game.
Ben Crawley would finish off the half hitting his second shot of the night for a 28-20 halftime lead.
“We are playing basketball, not ballet,” said GMC Prep cheerleader Blair Hall during the game.
The Bulldogs would outscore the visitors 15-6 in the third quarter behind a smart shot selection and a mix of stifling defense and quick steals.
The Bulldogs would then coast in the fourth stanza behind the leadership of Parker, the only senior on the team.
“Tonight, we learned and finally realized the ‘team concept’ we have been working to find,” said Parker. “As Nolan [Baugh] said, we moved the ball a lot and that set us up for some open looks.”
"Perseverance, that's what it took for me to get this going tonight,” said the game’s high scorer, McAllister. On the night McAllister had 15 points, followed by Parker with 13, and then Baugh with 11.
Archebelle finished with 7 points, Crawley added 6 and Justin Parham also tossed in a bucket.
The Bulldogs play Athens Academy in Athens Friday, before returning home Saturday night versus Taliaferro County.
