FORT VALLEY — An intensely-hot shooting team so far this season, the No. 21 Georgia College & State University men’s basketball team (5-1) cooled off in a 62-58 loss at Fort Valley State University (3-2) Monday night.
Georgia College hit just nine shots from the field in the second half of a defensive battle, shooting 24 percent (9-37), and just 29 percent overall (21-72).
Senior guard Graham Martin (Marietta) hit the 20-point plateau for the third time in six games this season, scoring 21 with nine rebounds. Class and backcourt mate Ty Rowland (Lilburn) tallied 13 points with seven boards. Junior forward Reece Wiedeman (Suwanee) added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Josh Hurst (Athens) nabbed a game-best 10 caroms.
The Bobcats especially struggled from long range, shooting 18 percent in the first half (3-16) and just 7-of-32 overall (.219). This coming off Thursday night, when GCSU netted a school-record 24 three pointers in a rout of Carver Bible College
Fort Valley had just two double-digit scorers, but seven of the nine players reached the scoring column. Jeremy Sledge led the way with 19 points, including 5-for-8 from downtown and seven rebounds, while Darrell Aiken had 15 points and seven boards, adding four steals. The Wildcat bench out-scored Georgia College’s 23-6.
The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m., traveling to Newberry College.
