Baldwin softball team blows out Central Thursday

Minter’s pitching, Baldwin offense lead team to first region victory of the season

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin Bravettes (3-5) got a huge win at home Thursday afternoon by overpowering region rival Central Macon, 15-4.

Pitcher Ashleigh Minter grabbed the victory after four innings of work and three strikeouts, and Baldwin’s defense did the rest.

The victory allowed Baldwin to move past a tough loss to region opponent Mary Persons earlier in the week.

“We played great defense and made some plays. Ivorin Jones turned a nice double play that was probably the defensive play of the game,” said head coach Donnie Coburn Thursday afternoon. “Mickey Heaton also made some nice plays at third. The routine plays were there for us today. The plays we had to make we made.”

Overall, the Bravettes played an outstanding defensive game, but their biggest accomplishment came from the plate, where they churned out 15 runs.

“From pitcher to catcher we were solid. We hit the ball very well today,” said Coburn.

But the Bravettes had to battle out of a deficit early. Central went up 2-0 in the first inning, but Baldwin clawed back and scored six runs in their half of the inning.

The Bravettes then added five runs in the second and three in the third to take control of the game. A bases loaded walk ended the contest for Central in the fourth inning.

Notable hitters for Baldwin High  included Kim Kerbo, who went 1 for 2 with two RBI, Shelby Tanner, who went 1 for 1 with two RBI, Amber Johnson, who went 1 for 1 with a triple and two RBI, Ikiah Palmer  who went 1 for 2 with one RBI, and  Katelyn Coburn, who went 1 for 2 with two RBI. Baldwin’s Kiana Clarke also notched an RBI after walking with the bases loaded to win the game. Baldwin’s Alicia Holsey also went 1 for 1 in the game.

The Bravettes are making up a game next Tuesday at Rutland, a region opponent, and they are also making up a game next Thursday with West Laurens.

Rutland and West Laurens are both the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in Baldwin High’s region.

The Bravettes are currently 3-5 on the season.
