Bulldog fans witnessed an impressive showing Saturday, Oct. 6, at Davenport Field, as Georgia Military College earned its first shut out of the season with a 27-0 win over Hargrave Military Academy.
Defense was the key in Saturday’s contest, with GMC holding the Tigers to only 165 total yards on offense and only 63 of those coming on the ground.
“With a slight change in scheme and personnel, I thought our defense played strong and even when they did bend a little bit, they still remained strong,” Bert Williams, head coach, said. “We gave up a couple of big plays, but other than that I don’t think they had a drive of seven or eight plays at the most.”
Leading the defense was Caleb Molby with 11 tackles against the Tigers, with St. Pierre Anilus trailing closely behind with seven tackles, two of which were sacks.
DeVonte Lambert also came away with a sack against Hargrave on Saturday to help the Bulldogs to victory.
Williams believes his defense is what made the game Saturday, especially with how they played against some of the most sought after players in the region.
“I thought that the intensity and the execution of the defense helped us get that win,” he said. “You’ve got some big time talent there, and our guys were able to step up and shut those guys down and not allow them to put points on the board.”
Offensively, GMC started Ky Tyler at the quarterback position, due to Clay Chastain sitting out for disciplinary reasons.
Tyler compiled 187 yards in the air and 71 yards on the ground for three touchdowns on the afternoon.
“He did a lot of good things. He started off really well,” Williams said. “He gives you a little bit more of a weapon on the ground.”
Akeem Judd led the team’s rushing attack with 19 carries for 86 yards, followed by Mario Alford with eight carries for 62 yards.
Leading the receiving core on the weekend was Montez McGuire with four receptions for 54 yards, while both Kevin Gary and Joseph Brooks each pulled one down for a touchdown each.
Williams was pleased with the depth the offense showed Saturday.
“Having that talent and that depth is a big reason we’ve been so prolific on the offense this season,” he said.
Improving to 4-2 on the season, the Bulldogs are excited about the win over Hargrave, especially in preparation for the team’s match up against Nassau Community College this weekend.
“It’s just important to get the win moving forward on the season, coming off the loss against Iowa Western,” Williams said. “It’s good to have that confidence and that success from this past weekend.”
The Bulldogs will hit the road again this weekend to take on Nassau Saturday, Oct. 13, at noon.
