SAVANNAH, Ga. — Senior guard Shaun Keaton (Albany, Ga.) became the 12th member of Georgia College & State University’s (6-1) 1,000-point club today (Dec. 30), leading the Bobcats to a 69-54 win over West Virginia Wesleyan University (1-8).
The victory gives Georgia College a 6-0 record all-time at the SpringHill Suites Midtown New Year’s Classic, hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Keaton’s 1,000th point came on a three-pointer with 3:34 left in the first half. He finished with a game-high 18 points, leading three GCSU in double-figure scoring.
Junior point guard Ty Rowland (Lilburn, Ga.) tallied 11 points, while senior guard Justin Brown (New Orleans) followed up a career-high 21 yesterday with 11 points today.
In the first meeting between these Bobcats, Georgia College came out hot, starting on a 14-2 run for the first 7:32. WVWU trimmed the lead to two at 21-19 with 4:52 left in the first, but couldn’t tie it.
Keaton got the first two points with a jumper, and GCSU would never give up the lead.
Rowland’s three pointer with 48 seconds left in the first half put GCSU up by double digits, where they would remain for the rest of the contest. Georgia College hit 10 threes, giving the team double-digit three pointers made in six of the season’s seven games.
WVWU’s Neven Zerevica had a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards, while Ryan Hoehner led the team with 11 points.
Keaton now has 1,008 points in his three-year career at GCSU, standing 78 behind Stan Lynn (1988-90) and 11th place. Keaton now has 180 three-pointers made, 43 behind John John Steensland (1996-2000) the all-time leader at GCSU.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday, Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m. returning to Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play at No. 25 Clayton State University (8-0, 1-0 PBC).
