Baldwin splits home basketball opener

The Baldwin High School Bravettes may have had a bit of a spirit hangover from the previous night’s playoff football game Saturday, as they had to come from behind as many as 25 points for a thrilling 66-61 victory over Northeast of Macon.

The Bravettes trailed 18-6 after one quarter and 37-17 at the half, only to come from behind the second half.

“We went in and talked and no one was down. They were just upset at themselves for the way they played in the first half,” said Coach Jenean Cooper-Bolston. “I don’t care how athletic you are, if your head’s not in the game, you can’t play your game. And I don’t feel as if our heads were in the game in the first half.”

In the third quarter, the Bravettes used a combination of quick hands for steals and rebounds to go with some timely baskets by Teshia Griswold and Valencia Tuft to outscore the Northeast Raiderettes by 12, cutting their lead to 50-42. Baldwin did much of the same in the last period to take their first lead of the game at 2:12 to go on a three-pointer by Tuft to make the score 59-57. Shan Basley, who scored 14 to go along with three assist and two steals, extended the Baldwin lead, and they would not relinquish.

Griswold scored five of the Bravettes last seven points to finish with 21 on the night to go along with 10 rebounds and three steals. Tuft was three for three on 3-pointers on the night and finished with 15 points.

The boys’ game that followed was eerily similar but with a different end result as the Braves lost a close one, 63-61.

Trailing by seven at the end of one, the Braves cut the Northeast lead to 32-29 at the half. With the momentum on their side, the Braves came out fast to start the third, but that was gone within 10 seconds as starter Jaron Richardson took a hard elbow to the shoulder and collarbone area and went down to the floor. Visibly hurt, Richardson had to be helped from the floor and missed the rest of the game.

“...Our kids showed their character and tenacity as they fought back hard and just came up short at the end,” Head Coach Lenwood May said.

The Braves and Raiders traded scores throughout the third and fourth quarters with Northeast taking the lead for good with only 1:14 to go. Both teams traded baskets and fouls over the last minute, and the Raiders held their own as Baldwin didn’t have time to get off the last shot as the clock expired. The Braves were led by Kenundra Moore’s 20 points and Javonis May, who scored 15.

Also for the night, LaTerrance Nelson had 11 points while Keivon Mason finished the game with nine.

With the Baldwin Braves football team hosting a third round playoff game, the basketball game Friday night will be rescheduled. Both teams will play Saturday night at Hancock Central. The next home games will be Saturday Dec. 6 against Putnam County.
