Bulldogs look to end season on a high note

The Georgia Military College Bulldogs conclude its season Friday against AAAA North Paulding.

This is the Wolfpack’s first football season and are sporting a 1-8 record, but with so many players, Bulldogs head coach Jon Cawley is taking nothing for granted.

“They’ve got 93 kids and we’ll be lucky to dress 24 kids. We had to have a game and that’s the only team we could get and we’ll give them all they want.”

Because GMC is playing a non-region schedule, the team is not eligible for playoffs.

But that won’t stop the team from fighting for one last game.

“We’re shooting for .500 that's our goal. I’ve told them “lets finish .500. We can’t get a winning season, but we can prevent a losing one. Lets play hard and fight all night and end the year on a good note,” Cawley said.

That being said, with 70 less players, the Bulldogs will be challenged.

“They’re a big school. They’re big up front with speed in the secondary. It’s something you would expect from a AAAA team. They’re good all around.”

The team is hoping last week’s offensive burst will carry over into this week.

“We ran it for 400 yards on the ground last week. We’re going to try and use that to our advantage. Everything clicked on the offensive line and we matched up pretty well.”

The Wolfpack are a pass oriented team, probably the most the Bulldogs have faced all season passing the ball 40-50 times per game.

“Hopefully our coverage will be better. They do like to throw the ball. We’ll disguise coverages, smoke and mirrors, try to hide stuff.”

Regardless of the outcome, Cawley made sure to give credit to the seniors, who will play their last game at GMC Friday.

“This group of seniors has been really special. They’ve won more games than the last four groups of seniors combined. I’m real proud of them and they’re all going to be very successful in life and I wish I had them all back next year.”

With one game to go this season, the Bulldogs hope that this season’s success will encourage others to play next season and excite the campus about GMC football.

“We just want to get more kids interested in football and get this school excited about football. Last Friday night was homecoming and it was exciting. We want to have that and build on that,” Cawley said.

The Bulldogs will make the four hour bus trip to Dallas on Friday afternoon for the 7:30 kickoff with the North Paulding Wolfpack.

“We don’t want to be cooped up on the bus for that long, but it’s just part of it. You make the adjustment. Hopefully we’ll come home with a win.”
