Trojans find success in first-ever home meet

MILLEDGEVILLE —

In only its first year of the program, John Milledge Academy’s wrestling team has made great strides. The JMA wrestling program hosted its first-ever regular season home meet Wednesday against Bulloch Academy and Mount de Sales.

Head coach Adam Gillhouse believes his men are starting to see just how special what they are accomplishing actually is to the school and the community.

“It’s something that’s been in the works long before I got to John Milledge,” Gillhouse said. “It was a special night for the kids. I think they’re starting to realize how big what they’re doing is for the school.”

The Trojans got things started with exhibition matches against Bulloch on Wednesday.

Said Gillhouse: “We had a lot of guys do well with that.”

Afterwards, senior wrestlers Gregory Duke, Logan Brookins, Heath McDonald and Will Lovins were all recognized during the senior night presentation.

“Those four guys are crucial to any success we’ve had,” Gillhouse said. “The leadership that they’re showing to these younger guys is invaluable.”

Following the presentation, JMA came back for a dual meet against Mount de Sales, in which the Trojans displayed a dominating performance in front of a home crowd to win 42-30.

“It was real special. We had a great crowd,” Gillhouse said. “A lot of students came out, a lot of teachers came out, and a lot of people in the community.”

Gillhouse was pleased with the support the Trojan wrestling teams received and excited that so many people are excited about the future of the program.

“It was big, the support that we had,” he said. “For a lot of people, it was their first wrestling meet they’ve ever been to, and I can’t tell you how many people were excited and came up to me and asked when the next one was going to be.”

Coming into form late in the season, Levi Veal, Joe Costillo, McDonald, Brookins and Lovins all earned pins against Mount de Sales.

“They were excited. We’re really starting to see the fruits of our labor,” Gillhouse said. “We’ve been working hard all year, and its fun to see how that hard work is paying off.”

The JMA wrestling teams hope to continue their momentum from their first ever home meet into the region tournament hosted by Weber in Atlanta on Feb. 1 and 2, as well as the state championships on Feb. 8 and 9 at Tattnall.
