GMC Prep’s Skylar Walker receives statewide honor

MILLEDGEVILLE — GMC Prep senior linebacker extraordinaire Skylar Walker is a beast on Friday night. He is big, fast and will go head-first into any daring tackle.

Walker is also a standout in the classroom and never lets the toughest formulas and theorems prevent him from getting ahead academically.

For his outstanding achievements both on the gridiron and in the classroom, Walker was recently named to the preseason Class A Academic Honor Roll by Georgia High School Football Magazine, which is the premier source of information on high school football in the state of Georgia.

“He made the Class A Academic Honor Roll. It’s a great honor and we nominated him,” said head coach Brad Owens as he answered a few brief questions during Tuesday’s practice. “We had a few of the guys receive it last year: Matt Harrison, Will Parker and Donovan Smith. So that’s four kids now in two years for us. I’m very proud of him.”

Walker is indeed a sharp young man and a class act, and he demonstrated Tuesday in practice why he is such a consummate team player.

“The honor feels pretty good. I usually don’t like to get individual awards, I’m more about being the team player,” said Walker.

Walker indicated that Friday night’s home opener versus Prince Avenue Christian is huge, and that the team needed to start protecting their home turf — historic Davenport Field.

“We’re feeling pretty good. We are all trying to get pumped up about it. We’re trying to change the tide at our home games,” said Walker. “We didn’t win one at home last year. So we want to try to come out, bust them in the mouth and get our fans pumped up about it.”

Walker’s exclusive selection was based on a 50/50 split between on the field performance and academic achievement. Only 30 players in the state were recognized for this honor.

The Region 7-A Bulldogs (1-0) will kick off their home opener versus Prince Avenue Christian (Region 8-A) at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.

Prince Avenue (0-1) lost their first game of the year versus Hebron Christian, 25-13, so they will come into Milledgeville hungry Friday night.
