From staff reports
The 2009 11-year-old Baldwin County All Stars traveled to recently traveled to Elbert County and finished third in the sub-district tournament.
In Game 1, the Baldwin team faced Martinez Evans, one of the best teams in the tournament. The strong pitching from the Martinez team clipped the Baldwin Team 14-0 in the first game.
In Game 2, Baldwin faced off against Master City. The two teams had both lost their opening games. Baldwin senior Andrew Prestwood took the mound, and Baldwin scored early and often to pull out to a 6-0 lead. Prestwood hit his limit of 45 pitches, which would allow for him to return to mound Monday if needed. After removing Prestwood, Master City mounted a comeback, but Baldwin County used Scott Nibett and Rob Morris out of the pen to hold on to a 8-6 win.
In Game 3, Baldwin met familiar foe Martinez Evans, the same team that defeated them in the opening game. Cody Rogers led the way on offense 4 for 5 and Rob Morris came to the mound and closed out the win for Baldwin 16-12.
In Game 4, Baldwin faced Martinez Evans again, with Prestwood on the mound in hopes of moving on to the championship game. After pitching his 85 pitch limit, Prestwood and Baldwin couldn’t hold Martinez and they rallied in the last inning to win 8-7.
Despite the loss, Coach Tom Rogers said he was particularly proud of his team and their showing.
“I think it was a great growing experience for a lot of these kids on this team,” said Rogers. “I am especially proud of my first year all stars Keaton Drinkwater, Nick Bentley and Chad Freeman. Nick played for me all year and hit one of the longest home runs I have ever seen by an 11 year old. Keaton is just one of those kids that does exactly what you ask him to do and never complains. Chad is one that the light came from last year to this year. In my nine years of coaching, there is only one other kid that I can remember that improved as much as Chad has from one year to the next.”
