Wayne Street sidewalk removed for Streetscape

MILLEDGEVILLE — The sidewalk along the west side of South Wayne Street has been removed and the trees along the street have been removed as the second phase of the Streetscape project gets underway in downtown Milledgeville.

According to Milledgeville Mainstreet Director/Downtown Development Director Belinda Washlesky construction commenced last Monday.

Sunday, June 6, the City of Milledgeville Public Works Department closed South Wayne Street for the removal of three large trees. The trees removed included one in front of Capital City, one across the street in front of Aubri Lanes and another at the intersection of South Wayne Street and Greene Street next to Magnolia State Bank.

The following day, Foskey Construction started the construction on the second phase. So far, remaining trees have been pruned and the sidewalks have been removed on South Wayne Street. Crews have also worked on water lines that run underneath the sidewalk, as well as sewage infrastructure. The absence of sidewalks and reduced parking options is a concern for affected downtown businesses.

Susan Martino with The Red Door said she doesn’t want shoppers to think that her businesses isn’t operating normally, though.

“We are still open for business,” she said.

Martino said that she did feel that Mainstreet and the Downtown Development Authority should be getting the word out that businesses are remaining open during the project.

Martino also said she’d been told by one of the workers that she should have sidewalk in front of her business by the middle of next week. Installation of lighting and new trees would likely come later.

According to an update provided by Washlesky, construction on each block should take 20 to 30 days to complete, barring weather complications. The first block that the construction company is working on is expected to be the most challenging.

The Streetscape project will begin near the Greene and South Wayne intersection and will be completed in phases. Sidewalks and infrastructure will be replaced and during the construction, some blocks of street side parking will be closed.
