MILLEDGEVILLE —
A community program at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center Saturday will give area residents the opportunity to try their hand at canoeing while taking in the pristine sights of wildlife at the Rock Eagle Lake.
Known as the Family Fun Adventure program, this weekend’s event is the third in a series of family-friendly programs that are held every year as a way to bring programming into the area community.
“In 2006, we decided to try our hand at community programming,” said Kelly Scott, assistant coordinator of the Environmental Education Program at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center. “People had been calling us asking about programs for the community. So, we saw a need for a public program aspect and that’s when we decided to try doing a community program at least twice a year and now once a month.”
Canoe Rock Eagle Lake, which begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, is an opportunity for local residents to take in the sights on Rock Eagle Lake.
“Folks will get a chance to go out on the lake,” she said. “They’ll have an instructor out on the lake and they’ll get PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices). The program will last about two hours and the instructor will provide canoe instruction, if needed, and they’ll get a chance to explore the lake.”
The program gives residents an opportunity to explore nature, she added.
“They’ll be able to get out there and see what they can see,” she said. “We’ve got turtles and Great Blue Herons and other birds in the area that they’ll hopefully be able to see. It’s a good family bonding experience.”
The program will begin at the Rock Eagle Natural History Museum, which gives attendees an opportunity to walk through the museum and view displays on 4-H history, Georgia history and Georgia agriculture, she added.
The cost for this weekend’s Canoe Rock Eagle Lake program is $5 for children 13 and older and adults and $3 for children ages 5 to 12 and all children must be accompanied by an adult, she said.
Other programs are scheduled for the rest of the year, added Scott, with a Family Adventure Fun program scheduled for Sept. 18 that will focus on the importance of local water bodies, and another program scheduled Nov. 20 that will include a campfire and an evening hike through the woods.
“We have one in September where they’ll actually be able to go collecting in a stream and discuss how important our water is and use a stream to assess how healthy the water is,” said Scott. “We just try to get them to understand that what they drop on their driveway will eventually end up in the water system. And then in November, it’s a night hike and a campfire.”
The Rock Eagle 4-H Center also holds another community program known as the Get R.E.A.L. (Rock Eagle Adult Learning) program, which is an adults-only programming series, she said.
Additionally, the Rock Eagle 4-H Center holds several other programs throughout the year including special homeschool days, for homeschooled children and their families, a Spring Break camp known as Camp Eco Adventure, and a Girl Scout weekend in the spring, she said.
