MILLEDGEVILLE —
By pulling out the red carpet for the stars of the community, the Boys & Girls Club of Baldwin and Jones Counties will have “A Night to Remember” during its fourth annual red carpet event.
With a night full of live music provided by Hat Trick, gift certificates to local businesses, heavy hors d’oeuvres and swing dancing, Boys & Girls Club Director Paul Bernard has already received $3,000 in donations from the community for the star-studded event and hopes to have at least $5,000 worth of items for the silent auction this year.
“Our volunteers thought of another way to raise money for the club to pay for operating expenses, and they came up with a silent auction and food night to help keep the Boys & Girls Club’s doors open,” he said. “Last year’s was the best one. We used to have it in a smaller place, but now we have a bigger venue to do the event, so it really has potential to make money for us.”
Guests will have the opportunity to bid on various prizes, including a week’s stay in a condo at Myrtle Beach and at a ski resort in Colorado, 50 yard line seats to the Atlanta Falcons game versus the Baltimore Ravens, two season passes to the Macon Symphony Orchestra, a bubblegum machine, gift baskets and more.
The classic Hollywood night will also feature a performance by the swing dance club of Georgia College & State University and provide dance lessons for guests. Theater department students will also transform into paparazzi for the evening as members of the board strut the red carpet dressed as Marilyn Monroe and other famous movie stars.
“People can purchase a star for $20 and have their name and a kid’s name on the wall of fame as [guests] walk down the red carpet,” Boys & Girls Club of Baldwin County Board of Directors President Dr. Doreen Sams said.
The event is slated for 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Milledgeville Country Club. Tickets include live music, dinner and the silent auction, costing $40 per person, $35 each for two and $30 per person for a group of six or more. A table of eight near the stage is priced at $260. All proceeds will fund the operation of the local program.
“On average we make about $3,000 in profit after operating expenses, but we hope to make $4,000 to $5,000 in profit this year,” Bernard said.
With already 60 tickets sold, Sams hopes to fill the Milledgeville Country Club with 250 stars.
“Hopefully this will be the biggest auction ever. I’m looking forward to it this year,” she said. “It’s all about having a good time and supporting a good cause.”
As of Wednesday, 30 local, national and online companies had agreed to take part in the big event as sponsors to support the local program’s mission, to enable all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
“We appreciate all donations ... no matter how small,” resource chair Amanda Martin said. “The Boys & Girls Club has been around for 20 years, and we hope to be around for another 20.”
