Deep Roots Festival lineup announced

MILLEDGEVILLE — The much-anticipated 2010 Deep Roots Festival musical lineup was unveiled on Z97’s Winning Wednesdays radio program, with up and coming indie band Delta Spirit headlining the event and other notable musicians and bands including local favorite Stokeswood, 2010 Milledgeville Idol performers, Grammy-winner Tommy Crane and his band the Crosstown Allstars and Saint Francis, a newly formed group that evolved from jam band mainstay Moonshine Still, are set to take the stage in October.

Jimmy Holder, Deep Roots Festival Main Stage director, was on hand to personally announce the lineup and gave strong remarks about this year’s festival, which will take place beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23.

“I think this year is the most solid lineup we’ve ever had,” said Holder. “From start to finish, it’s music that I wouldn’t want to miss.”

First off in the schedule on the Bellamy Apartments and Louis Herron Toyota Main Stage will be a performance by several of the 2010 Milledgeville Idol performers.

For those who missed Milledgeville Idol this year, the performance at 1:15 p.m. will feature a showcase of some of this year’s most notable 2010 Milledgeville Idol performances including this year’s winner, Jon Peeler.

Next up in the lineup is a newly formed band known as Saint Francis at 2:15 p.m. Locals may recognize lead singer Scott Baston and two other musicians in the band as former members of Moonshine Still, a band that not only toured prominently in the south for more than decade but has also toured nationally and performed at summer music festivals such as Bonnaroo.

The newly formed band recently performed at Bragg Jam in Macon and has other Macon and Atlanta-area performances scheduled in the near future.

At 3:30 p.m., a former Milledgeville Idol runner-up, Jon Scott, will take the stage with his band to perform a musical set list of country music.

Scott’s new single, “Call Me Crazy,” is currently making its way onto several country music stations across the country and the single is also on several radio charts.

At 4:40 p.m., attendees will have the opportunity to hear the distinct guitar sounds of a Grammy-winning musician who played with the Charlie Daniels Band for nearly 20 years and is considered by many to be the godfather of Southern Rock, according to Holder.

Tommy Crane, who won a Grammy for co-writing the Charlie Daniels Band’s song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” will perform as Tommy Crane and the Crosstown Allstars.

“They say he invented the southern rock sound,” said Holder, upon announcing the band as part of the lineup.

After the performance, the winners of the Deep Roots Festival barbecue competition will be announced before the evening lineup of musical performances begin at 7:15.

First up in the night performances will be Knoxville, Tenn., band The Dirty Guv’nuhs, a country jam rock and pop band that is currently touring as a part of the Zac Brown Band Cruise.

At 8:45 p.m., Stokeswood, a local favorite and mainstay band that includes both local residents and former Georgia College & State University students who met in Milledgeville, will make its way to the stage to set the mood as the supporting act for the final musical performance of the event.

Stokeswood’s debut album, Carassia, was released in 2009, and the band has since been performing all across the southeast including venues in Atlanta, Miami and Athens, with national tour dates scheduled in the near future.

At 10:20 p.m., up and coming indie sensation Delta Spirit, a band that was recently featured as Starbuck’s free iTunes download of the week, will take the stage and share their brand of indie rock and soul music.

The band, which hails from San Diego, Calif., released their first LP, Ode to Sunshine, in 2007 and quickly hit the national music scene touring with the likes of Dr. Dog, Cold War Kids and The Shins.

The band’s new album, History from Below, was released in June, and it is currently charting at No. 8 on the Billboard Heat Sinkers Chart, up from 18 the previous week.

Their new single “Golden State” has received heavy airtime on XM and Sirius satellite radio channels, and the band recently performed on Late Night with Conan O’Brian with an enthusiastic reception from O’Brian himself.

The band was also featured on the NPR World Cafe program and also made waves at the 2009 Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza summer music festivals.
