Civic Woman's Club donates history to GC Special Collections

MILLEDGEVILLE — Members of the Civic Woman's Club of Milledgeville donated more than 45 years of club records, scrapbooks and memorabilia to the Special Collections archived in the Georgia College Library.

Nancy Bray, director of the archives, accepted the materials from club president Sheila Cooper.

Nathalie Goodrich, a founding member of the club in 1964 and its first president, observed: "Back then, there was no outlet for women to do the civic work [we envisioned] in Milledgeville. At the time, founding members were in a Junior Woman's Club."

Maxine Goldstein, also a founding member, said: "Forming the Civic Woman's Club was an important move for women in Milledgeville because back then and continuing today, we wanted to be involved in our community and to help people in need."

Mary Lucik said: "We wanted to maintain a connection to our community, to give back to its people."

Bray commented: "The Georgia College Special Collections is delighted to see this important donation because it traces the history of women in this community over more than a four-decade period. We have no other collection of the same breadth and depth. These materials represent an invaluable research resource for both undergraduate and graduate papers and publications."

President Cooper summed up by saying: "In the years between 1964 and 2012, massive social changes swept through our nation, every one of them affecting the roles and opportunities for American women. These materials — minutes, programs, projects, publicity — represent the reality of those changes in our community."

CWC members are committed to work for the benefit of greater Milledgeville area residents through seven programs: arts, conservation, education, public issues, home life, international and support of Tallulah Falls School. The club meets the third Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. in Allen's Market, corner of Wayne and Macintosh streets. All area women are cordially invited to attend and to become members of the club.

The Civic Woman's Club is a member of the GA Federation of Women's Clubs and the General Federation of Women's Clubs.
