Community Fun Day scheduled next weekend

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Milledgeville-Baldwin County community and surrounding areas are invited to enjoy a day full of free food, entertainment, prizes, activities and fellowship during the fifth annual Community Fun Day next week.

Sponsored by James Harris, Jr. Ministries, Inc., a local nonprofit organization, Pastor Harris said the family fun event began as a way to bring the community together and help individuals in need.

“The event started out with a vision I had to give back to the community. I wanted to give back to those who are less fortunate,” he said. “Last year we fed in the upwards of 1,000 people. There will be nothing for sale at the event; It’s just a breath of fresh air. This is our method of showing the love of Christ to folks because he came to serve.”

This year’s grand event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 at Huley Park off of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Various church groups and organizations will be on site providing information on health, teen awareness and other resources for the entire family. The menu will consist of grilled chicken, barbecue, hamburgers, hot dogs, soup, Brunswick stew, roasted and boiled peanuts, chips, popcorn, cotton candy, dessert and drinks.

“Every year we try to make it bigger and better,” said Susie Chapman, chair of the Community Fun Day committee. “DJ Doctor Love will be on the ones and twos while Ricky Lawrence will be taking pictures. A clown will make balloon animals for the kids and there will be ponies, a smoking fire house, bounce houses, inflatables, dart-throwing games, and other games for the kids. We will have TV’s set up outside so people can play Wii video games.”

With the help of donations and contributions, prizes and giveaways will be awarded, including gift baskets, microwaves, bicycles, crock-pots, pictures, phones and gaming systems. Elementary through college-level students on the honor roll will be eligible to place their name in a raffle on the day of the event for a chance to win one of three iPads.

“We will have our potato drop where we’re giving away 10,000 to 20,000 pounds of potatoes. Different businesses in town donated clothes and coats, so we will be giving those away to the less fortunate,” Chapman said. “In the near future, we’re looking to get some grants. I thank God for using me the way he does to run with [Pastor Harris’] vision.”

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., live performances will take the stage, including church choirs and dance groups.

“We’ve had several people donate and we’re grateful to all of them for making this possible to maintain our main theme, which is to give back to the community,” Harris said. “Anybody and everybody is welcome. We want the whole community to come share with us and just give back to folks.”
