CGTC, MGTC leadership teams meet

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Members of the leadership teams at Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) in Macon and Middle Georgia Technical College (MGTC) in Warner Robins met earlier this week in Milledgeville to get acquainted and prepare for the upcoming merger of the two colleges. The group spent the day together and toured part of the CGTC service area.

At last week’s meeting, members of the State Board of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) unanimously voted to merge CGTC and MGTC to form the second largest technical college in Georgia with a service area the size of the state of Delaware.

Currently, CGTC serves Bibb, Baldwin, Crawford, Jones, Monroe, Putnam, and Twiggs counties. MGTC serves Dooly, Houston, Peach, and Pulaski counties. Combined, the college will have an 11-county service delivery area.

After meeting in Macon, the group visited Milledgeville and had lunch at The Original Crockett Family Cafeteria and Catering. Crockett’s owner Frances Crockett greeted and welcomed the group. Afterward, the leadership teams toured the Milledgeville campus and the Putnam County Center.

Members of the both leadership teams include CGTC Interim President Dr. Ivan Allen, Dana Davis, Deborah Burks, Becky Lee, Tonya McClure, Gardner Long, Hank Griffeth, and Dr. Amy Holloway from CGTC; and Craig Jackson, Michelle Siniard, Brian Snelgrove, Brenda Brown, Janet Kelly, Dr. Joan Thompson, and Jeff Scruggs from MGTC. Allen and Scruggs, MGTC’s acting president, have been selected to lead the merger process at the local level.

In the coming weeks, TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson will announce his choice for a president for the combined college. The Warner Robins location will be considered the college’s primary campus, though the president will maintain another office on the Macon campus.

The name for the merged college will be decided in the coming weeks by the TCSG State Board. The merger is expected to be finalized by July 1, 2013. Once the CGTC-MGTC merger is complete, the system will have successfully merged 17 colleges into eight, leaving 24 colleges statewide.

For more information about the merger, e-mail merger@centralgatech.edu or merger@middlegatech.edu. Questions can also be answered at each college’s Facebook page.
