Cadets ask Council for help saving the environment

MILLEDGEVILLE — The city’s young people want the Milledgeville City Council to join them in preserving the environment for their generation and all the ones to come behind them.

Three Georgia Military College cadets addressed City Council to solicit their support for efforts to improve the environment for future generations. Keep Milledgeville-Baldwin Beautiful Executive Director Angie Gheesling also invited council members to attend an environmental forum at 5:30 p.m. Monday on the Georgia College & State University campus to learn more about local efforts to preserve the environment.

In other action, Council voted unanimously in favor of accepting the findings of the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission to grant a special use to allow a car wash to be located at 1617 N. Columbia St.

Council agreed to three different appointments Tuesday. Mayor Richard Bentley recommended and Council unanimously approved the appointment of Herman Driskell Sr. to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

And Council also unanimously approved a resolution to appoint Milledgeville Police Chief Woodrow Blue and Milledgeville Public Works Director Jack Graham as pre-adverse hearings officers. Pre-Adverse officers hear the first round of appeals from permanent city employees, who were hired before April 1, 1997, that have been accused of violating the city’s personnel policy. These officers do not hear appeals from employees hired after April 1, 1997, as they have a separate appeals process.

And finally, Council unanimously agreed on a resolution to authorize Bentley to sign a U.S. Department of Agriculture Farmer’s Market Promotional Program Grant, should it be awarded to the City of Milledgeville. Bentley said the grant would assist the city in promoting its downtown farmers market. Bentley said the grant does not require any kind of matching funds from the city.
