Update Quake rattles portions of Central Georgia

A small earthquake rattled portions of the Central Georgia region Sunday evening, according to reports.

The 3.2 magnitude earthquake occurred near Deepstep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. According to Dr. Andy Newman with the Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences the quake occurred in an area that is already prone to seismic activity. He said that the presence of Lake Sinclair and subsequent lake water level changes may be a contributing factor.

"It is likely that changes in the lake level may have triggered, rather than induced this earthquake," Newman said. "This area of tectonic stress increased or decreased slightly."
