This Thanksgiving, families around the community will have a little more to be thankful for thanks to a partnership between Flagg Chapel Baptist Church and The Grove apartments.
Flagg Chapel and The Grove apartments teamed up to give away 150 turkeys to families across the Milledgeville community Saturday. For the second year in a row, the two neighboring organizations joined forces to make this a tasty holiday tradition.
Flagg Chapel Pastor the Rev. Omer Reid told The Union-Recorder that Campus Crest Communities, the North Carolina-based company that operates The Grove apartments, has been very generous in sponsoring Flagg Chapel Baptist in the turkey giveaway and other holiday events.
Campus Crest Communities also helped Flagg Chapel make improvements to their church facilities such as converting a bus barn into a new gymnasium and renovating the church’s annex building, Reid said.
In the second year of the turkey giveaway, the church has made strides to ensure that these holiday turkeys get onto the tables of local families that need them the most, Reid said. Flagg Chapel worked with the local Division of Family and Children Services to reach out to families in need.
“The organization of the way we are doing things this year is helping us touch a lot more needy families,” Reid said. “All this [organization] was done through the efforts of our benevolent missionary department.”
The Grove’s General Manager Nicole Lipper told The Union-Recorder that events like the turkey giveaway help Campus Crest Communities realize its philosophy of benefiting the communities where their apartments are located.
“We try to build communities with the students who live in our properties by being good examples of how students-who will be our future leaders-can give back to the communities around them,” Lipper said.
Flagg Chapel Deacon Johnny Williams said that the turkey giveaway is a good thing that he hopes will encourage people to share the holiday spirit all year long.
“It’s a good thing that the community and different organizations are coming together to look out for one another,” he said. “By sharing food, [these organizations] are ensuring that families will have a good time together on Thanksgiving.”
