Ever dreamed of building a straight or of seeing the river or maybe going all-in? Those familiar with the terms used in Texas Hold’em poker, now have the opportunity to enjoy an amateur tournament sanctioned by the World Poker Tour at Choby’s Friday night.
The World Poker Tour Amateur Poker League is hosting live Texas Hold’em tournaments Friday nights at Choby’s at Little River.
Frank Hustek with the World Poker Tour has largely organized the tournaments that he says offer no risks, just rewards.
“This is an official amateur tournament and it is free to play,” Hustek said. “You play for points, not money. The points lead to seeding in monthly tournaments, regional and eventually national tournaments.”
The tournament will be in a private area, according to Choby’s owner Linda Kerce, who said she is excited about the tournament
“It is a separate space from the dining room on what we call our porch,” Kerce said. “We are really happy about this tournament. I’ve had some great excitement from people who are planning on playing.”
Both Hustek and Kerce said one of the best things about the amateur tournament is that no one is playing for money.
“It’s a wonderful way to spend an evening, and it’s not gambling,” Kerce said. “I think it is going to be such a fun thing. It is just great entertainment and such a good way to spend an evening.”
Hustek said the environment allows people to get out and have a lot of fun.
“The players enjoy socializing,” he said. “It gets them out of the environment of the cash game. People are learning how to play, so it is a great way for anyone to learn the game.”
The amateur tournament comes to Milledgeville largely through the effort of The Union-Recorder Publisher Keith Barlow.
“It is great to be able to build this partnership with a great organization and a great venue like Choby’s,” Barlow said. “What better place could there be to come out for this fun tournament than Choby’s?”
The tournaments will be held at 7 and 10 p.m. Players must be 21 years old. Choby’s is located on U.S. Highway 441 N on the shores of Lake Sinclair.
