How strong would you have to be to pull a 126,000-pound 757 jet airplane in 13 seconds? Well, how about the power of 20 junior and senior high school students?
John Milledge Academy’s Anchor Club recently participated in the “Plane Pull” for the Ronald McDonald House. JMA teamed up with students from Georgia Military College and Baldwin High School, as well as some football players from Rutland High School, to pull a 757 jet airplane for a distance of 12 feet at the Macon Airport. Students wore gloves and tugged at the rope attached to the planes’ legs with all their might.
Anchor Club sponsor Cindy Nunn said this was not an easy task but they felt great when they realized the plane was actually moving.
“...We were like ‘Wow! We really did it,’” Nunn said. “We felt really good for what we did, since more than half of us were girls.”
JMA junior Tyler Panfil said he was amazed and overwhelmed with excitement after he had realized that they had accomplished the task along with the other 15 groups.
“Compared to most groups, we had like 10 people less than them and we still did it,” Panfil said.
JMA junior Shelby Roberts had doubts in the beginning, but after all of the straining and grunting, it was a cool feeling.
“I never thought we could pull it ‘cause we only had 20 people,” Roberts said.
The Anchor Club, along with help from the other schools, raised $500 for the Ronald McDonald house. The Ronald McDonald house gives families a place to stay when their children are in the hospital.
Panfil and Roberts plan to continue in helping the club raise money through various fundraisers next year as well. Nunn said the group is already anticipating for the club to participate again in the “Plane Pull” next year, so they hope to save their strength for the big day.
