A 32-year-old man was killed in a construction accident Wednesday when trusses supporting the roof gave way and crushed him.
Investigator Ricky Brown with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said that Timothy Tyrone Dixon of Wrightsville was part of a construction crew working on the rebuilding of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. The church had been destroyed by a tornado in February.
Dixon was crushed by the trusses, and other workers injured went to hospitals for treatment, according to Brown.
“Two [men] were flown off, but it was anticipated they would survive,” Brown said.
James Anthony Hines, 36, of Wrightsville and Edward Lawrence of Hancock County were flown to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Hines suffered back injuries and Lawrence had leg injuries.
Bobby Chapman, 56, of Crawfordville, was taken for medical treatment at Oconee Regional Medical Center in Milledgeville.
Brown said the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration had been notified of the accident and officials were sending an investigative team to the site.
The accident remains under investigation. Brown said that he doesn’t foresee criminal charges being filed, but that the department had not ruled it out.
