Babysitter faces child cruelty charge

The Associated Press

HINESVILLE — Authorities have charged a babysitter with cruelty to children and a 2-year-old boy is fighting for his life after authorities say the child somehow fell.

Hinesville Police charged 29-year-old Christian Ballard with cruelty to children. The unidentified child was in stable but critical condition at Memorial in Savannah Tuesday afternoon with brain swelling.

Police say they came to a home where Ballard was watching the child around 9:30 a.m. Monday for a report of a child having fallen.

Police say they interviewed the babysitter, but had questions about his story.

A phone number listed for Ballard was disconnected Tuesday.
