MILLEDGEVILLE —
The YES (Youth Enrichment Services) program youth and families of Eagle Ridge Elementary School received an inspiring message and interactive presentation from National PTA President-elect Otha Thornton Wednesday afternoon about the value of education and importance of parental involvement.
As a retired United States Army Lieutenant Colonel, Thornton’s last two assignments were with the White House Communications Agency as a communications officer for Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and United States Forces-Iraq in Baghdad, states the National PTA website. He earned a Bronze Star Medal for exceptional performance in combat operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom 2009-2010. He was appointed by the governor of Maryland to serve on a Maryland Education Task Force after serving as a nominating leader and board development committee chairman for the Maryland PTA. Thornton’s military background afforded him the opportunity to volunteer throughout the country and the world at various local and council levels.
Funded by the Georgia Department of Education through a grant awarded by the 21st Century Community Learning Center, the YES program’s mission is to raise achievement and educational aspirations for students in grades 3 through 12 each school day between 3 and 5 p.m., ultimately aiming for students to work together in order to build a whole community that says “yes” to making promises come true. YES is a collaborative project of Georgia College, the Baldwin County Board of Education and Baldwin County Parks and Recreation.
