Georgia College hosts 36th annual Regional Science and Engineering Fair

MILLEDGEVILLE — Hundreds of central Georgia students will bring their research to life at the Regional Science and Engineering fair this weekend at Georgia College’s Centennial Center.

Kindergartners to high students will compete from 10 counties: Baldwin, Bibb, Hancock, Jasper, Jones, Putnam, Monroe, Washington, Wilkinson and Twiggs.

“Participants learn how to communicate about things that interest them in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields,” said Dr. Rosalie Richards, director of the Science Education Center.

Projects range from finding out which duck tape is strongest to Mentos explosions and measuring the speed of light using egg whites.

The top ranking middle and high school projects will move on to the State Science and Engineering Fair in Athens, and the Best in Show high school winners will advance to the international competition in Phoenix, Ariz. later this year.

The students will also compete in the Parachute Design Challenge, where they will have 45 minutes to design and construct a parachute out of materials provided.

“This is just one avenue where students can see the importance of STEM to life, education and the economy,” said Richards.

More than 200 Georgia College students and faculty as well as area scientists, engineers and educators will volunteer for the event and serve as judges.

“We want the fair to give students firsthand experience of how scientists and engineers communicate their findings and advance their fields,” said Richards. “Who knows? This could open a door to furthering their STEM education and a career.”
