October auto theft solved by MPD

MILLEDGEVILLE — An arrest was made in reference to an entering auto case that occurred late October 2012, according to Milledgeville Police.

After the recent rash of entering autos and burglaries in the area, MPD decided to revisit the October case. Maj. Reggie Hill said Det. Everett January of MPD worked tirelessly on this case, which led to the arrest of Demetress Choates.

“This was a good arrest, and hopefully will slow some of the entering auto thefts and burglaries around the downtown and college areas. The photo of this suspect will hopefully generate further leads when people look at it,” Hill said. “One of the key learning points is to be vigilant, and leave an outside light on. Remember to lock all valuables up and secure your vehicle.”

Choates has been a suspect on police radar for several months, due to sightings of him around areas other crimes have been committed. At this time, Choates has been charged with one count of entering auto with several other charges pending.

The Georgia College Police Department initially started the investigation last October after receiving a call to unlock a vehicle at The Liberty House. Upon GC police arrival, the victim remembered leaving her vehicle unlocked overnight.

A note was located from a witness stating that an unknown black male was rummaging through the vehicle sometime that night. The witness left the note and secured the vehicle.

After unlocking the vehicle, a cell phone was located that didn't belong to the victim.
