Opening statements in Beck murder trial

IRWINTON — Opening statements in the Zachary Allen Beck murder trial began 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Wilkinson County Courthouse.

Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney Fred Bright said jury selection took up all day Monday. More than 250 jurors were summoned.

The state and defense both selected 12 jurors and three alternates

“This case will take all week,” Bright said. “It will probably go into Friday.”

Beck is charged with one count malice murder, one count felony murder, and one count armed robbery.

The now 24-year-old Beck's charges stem from the Wilkinson County murder and robbery of 54-year-old Ronnie Rozier in January 2011. Rozier was shot multiple times at his Parker Springs Church Road home just south of the Baldwin County line.

Beck was quickly identified as the lone suspect and was apprehended near Savannah. Shell casings possibly related to the crime were recovered in Baldwin County along U.S. Highway 441.

He was indicted by a Wilkinson County grand jury in March 2011.
