Local man gets 20 years

MILLEDGEVILLE —

A man received a 20-year sentence for child molestation Friday, according to Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Chase Guerin.

Zachary Brady will serve 15 years in prison and five years on probation.

Brady was also fined $1,000 and must register as a sex offender.

The defendant was a long-time family friend, who lived at the 13-year-old victim's residence.

Brady was charged with molesting the 13-year-old daughter, while her parents left to play cards at a friend's house. Brady was supposed to watch the young girl in their absence.

The victim suffers from Angelman syndrome, making speech difficult. Brady took advantage of her condition, according to Guerin.

As soon as the parents left, Brady took the victim back to her bedroom and molested her.

The youngest daughter was locked out of the house. She witnessed the crime.

“We had testimony of the sister that saw this happening. The victim couldn't testify to the jury,” Guerin said.

DNA evidence played a major role in the conviction. The crime lab analyzed seminal fluids on the victim's sheet, which matched Brady.

“Brady exploited the fact that she was so severely limited. I think we owe a little more to the weakest ones of our society. The fact that he did this was a terrible thing,” Guerin said.

Baldwin County's Detective Greg See worked this case with assistance from GBI crime scene investigator Todd Crosby. Guerin said both did a professional job.
