Cause unknown in fatal wreck

An Eatonton man was killed in a wreck on U.S. Highway 441 around noon Saturday after crossing over two lanes of traffic and hitting another vehicle head on.

According to Sgt. Dale Watson with the Georgia State Patrol, 29-year-old Anthony Petty was driving an Oldsmobile Cutlass south on Highway 441 just south of Log Cabin Road Saturday, and he crossed over into the turning lane and the left-hand northbound lane and hit a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by 55-year-old Johnny Griffin from Milledgeville.

“Petty was traveling south on 441 and he crossed the turn lane and entered into the northbound lane and struck a vehicle that was traveling north on 441,” said Watson.

Petty had to be extricated from the vehicle, said Watson.

Griffin was taken to the Oconee Regional Medical Center, but he did not have any life-threatening injuries, said Watson.

No charges are pending in connection to the accident, he said, as they were unable to determine why Petty crossed over into oncoming traffic.

“We don’t know what happened, why he crossed into the other lane,” said Watson.
