Council gets formal invitation to unification discussion

MILLEDGEVILLE — Milledgeville City Council was extended a public invitation Tuesday for members to be part of a committee that is tasked with developing a proposed charter for the potential consolidation of Milledgeville and Baldwin County governments.

Former longtime City Councilman Ken Vance, chair of the committee, spoke to Council Tuesday representing the group that will pursue the creation of a document that could be used to chart the course forward if the voters in the city and county choose to pursue a consolidated government. Steering committee members include: Stan Aldridge, Candice Haynes, Nancy Hartley, the Rev. Tony Hurt, Edward Kinuea, Randy New, the Rev. Omer Reid, Lisa Shinholster and Vance.

"Our purpose is to draft a charter for your purview," Vance said.

Vance asked Council members to become ex-officio members of the committee and take part in upcoming meetings where the proposal will be drafted.

Vance also asked the Council to consider indicating their support of the committee so that the group could enlist the assistance of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia.

Council members asked questions about the consolidation proposal, most clearly indicating their wariness to the project.

Vance fielded the questions and concluded by telling Council members that above all, the historical significance of Milledgeville is a goal of the consolidation movement.
