Old Capital Museum lecture series begins Tuesday

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Georgia’s Old Capital Museum continues its Evenings with History lecture series at  7 p.m. Tuesday with “Entertainment and Murder in the Old Capital.”

The lecture will feature two presentations by students from Dr. Bob Wilson’s 2012 local history class. Sara Ellen Wood, will discuss the Lucas Tavern, a popular gathering spot in Milledgeville from 1812-1821 and Newell Hall, a later and more genteel gathering place for balls, lectures, performances, and meetings from 1855 to the mid-1970s.

A trio of scholars — Candice Aaron, Gordon Thomas and Scott Stancil — will focus their presentation on Marion Stembridge who capped several criminal activities by the murder of two prominent lawyers in 1953. This incident was later fictionalized by Pete Dexter in his 1988 book, “Paris Trout.”

Following the presentations in the Legislative Chamber of the Old Capitol, the audience will have the opportunity to visit with the presenters over refreshments.

The Evenings With History lecture series is sponsored annually by Georgia's Old Capital Museum and is held in the historic Legislative Chambers of the Old Statehouse on the Georgia Military College campus.

The March lecture on Tuesday, March 12, is “From Cadet to Cabinet,” and features former Secretary of Labor William J. Usery as the speaker.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

The lecture series is presented in the Legislative Chamber of the Old Capitol Building on the Georgia Military College campus. For more information call (478) 453-1803.
