Community project tells stories of Milledgeville via art

MILLEDGEVILLE — A new community project will build bonds over art to create stories of Milledgeville during a series of artistic workshops.

To kick off the Stories through Art initiative, a public reading of “Waddie Welcome and the Beloved Community” is slated at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Georgia Military College’s Goldstein Center for the Performing Arts with authors Tom Kohler and Susan Earl. A reception with h’orderves will follow.

“The book is about a true story set in Savannah of friendships that transcended divisions of disability, race, and income and created powerful new possibilities in the whole community,” said Colin Moore, community research specialist at Digital Bridges.

Each of the five workshops will be held every Saturday in February from 9 a.m. to noon at which participants will create a quilt, mural, poetry, collages and oral history storytelling. Local artists leading each of the workshops include Cookie Noel, Andrea Sowell, Valerie Aranda, Paul Ayo, Jeanette Vaughn Waddell and Kim Joris.

To register for a workshop, visit Digital Bridges in downtown Milledgeville at 127 W. Hancock St., or complete an online registration form at www.thedigitalbridges.com. With limited space available, the deadline to register for a workshop is Sunday, Jan. 20.

For more information about the workshops, or to register, call Digital Bridges at (478) 387-0254 or e-mail colin@thedigitalbridges.org.
