2009 Relay for Life kicks off

In 2005, Sgt. Paul Reese of the Milledgeville Police Department was diagnosed with colon cancer.

Four years later, he’s still alive — and knows he owes a lot to that survival to the American Cancer Society and its work related to researching and finding a cure for cancer.

“My motto is ‘I have cancer — but cancer doesn’t have me,’” Reese said.

Reese is the honorary chair for the 2009 Baldwin County Relay For Life, scheduled to be held April 3 - 4 at the South Creek property off Highway 441.

Reese spoke to a group of more than 40 team captains, survivors and Relay officials at the kick-off for the 2009 event, which was held Tuesday evening at Northside Baptist Church.

“In law enforcement, we are used to fighting an enemy. Cancer is my enemy, and I am a sore loser,” Reese said. “I am here to tell you today that we are not going to let this beat us. We are in this struggle together.”

It’s a struggle that Nancy Mills knows a great deal about — Mills is the former event chair for the Baldwin County Relay, a position she held for more than four years.

“Our final total raised last year was $237,140. That comes to 5.225 per capita. That’s pretty good,” Mills said. “We could not have done that without each and every one of you. You all did a great job last year.”

Lindsi Pearson, American Cancer Society community manager, who has had family members affected by cancer, also spoke to those present Tuesday evening and thanked the group for their efforts, noting the money raised this year, just as last year, helps to assist cancer survivors in Baldwin County.

“The ACS has assisted 47 individuals from Baldwin County, provided financial assistance to 10 people, assisted one person with lodging, and aided 13 patients through our patients program,” Pearson said. “Everyone out there has done such an amazing job.”

Charlene Dawson, event chair for the 2009 Baldwin County Relay, was also present to meet with team captains and provide information to those in attendance Tuesday.

“It’s going to be a challenge. It’s a new location, but I think everybody will be happy. We’re hoping more people will stay all night,” Dawson said. “I would like to thank the Settles for donating so much for this Relay.”

Dawson was referring to David and Cathy Settle, who own the South Creek property, and have agreed to provide items such as Porta-Potties, security, RV hook-ups, shower facilities and other items for the 2009 Baldwin County Relay in April.

The 2009 Baldwin Count Relay will be held April 3 and 4 at South Creek, 2949 Hwy 441 South.

The next team captain meeting will be at Northside Baptist Church on Jan. 6 at 5:30 p.m., followed by meetings on Feb. 3, March 3 and March 24.
