GDOT eyes Bone bridge

The Georgia Department of Transportation will hold an open house Thursday to discuss a proposed detour plan for the Wayne Street/Harry Bone Bridge.

The meeting will take place in the Academic Complex at Georgia Military College on Elbert Street from 5 to 7 p.m.

The GDOT is examining the possibility of replacing the bridge that runs over Fishing Creek on Wayne Street, also known as state Route 243/US 441 Business, at an undetermined future date.

The open house event will allow the public to provide its thoughts on the proposed detour for the project and speak directly with DOT representatives.

“We are eager to hear the viewpoints and concerns of all area residents. The Georgia DOT encourages all interested parties to provide their inputs for this project,” Tony Collins, GDOT district engineer in Tennille, said in a press release issued by the GDOT.

The bridge is named for Harry Bone, who served as mayor of Milledgeville from 1948 to 1954, according to information available from the Twin Lakes Library System.

In addition, Bone was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Milledgeville and was also involved in the manufacturing of clay in the Central Georgia area.
