Moffitt linked to MySpace ‘Jake’
Derrick Moffitt was released Wednesday afternoon from Wilkinson County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
“His family was transferring the bond from Clarke County,” said Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massee.
The 36-year-old Georgia Military College professor who was arrested Friday and charged with sexual exploitation of a child and stalking portrayed himself on the Internet as a GMC student, according to detectives.
The MySpace.com Web site through which Moffitt reportedly lured juveniles remained active Wednesday.
Detectives traced a Web site for “Jake” back to Moffitt’s computer, which deputies seized from Moffitt’s home Friday, according to Capt. Chris Spires, Baldwin County chief of
investigations.
Moffitt’s online persona, “Jake,” is portrayed as a 19-year-old GMC student pursuing an associate’s degree in criminal justice.
The site attributed to the former GMC prep softball coach features a photograph of a young, bare-chested man with blond hair wearing a baseball cap and looking at the camera with a bored expression.
The background on “Jake’s” site displays the person’s favorite team — the San Francisco Giants. Moffitt played baseball at Newberry College where he earned his bachelor’s degree in political science.
