Officers, attorneys to take part in DUI training

MILLEDGEVILLE —

With funding from the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS), the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia will present a free, six-hour course on investigating and prosecuting DUI cases, co-hosted by the Honorable Fred Bright, district attorney for the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit, and Sheriff Bill Massee, Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19.

The course will be held at the Baldwin County Courthouse in the fourth floor courtroom. Students will be comprised of both prosecutors and law enforcement officers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Center for Statistics and Analysis, in 2009 Georgia had 1,284 total traffic fatalities, 331 of which were alcohol-related. That total represents 26 percent of the year-end traffic fatalities.

Successful investigation and prosecution of DUI and vehicular homicide cases requires that all law enforcement and prosecutors work, train, and learn together. The free program is specifically designed to bring together police officers and prosecutors in this area to learn and discuss the latest strategies and techniques for investigating and prosecuting DUI and related offenses that occur in this jurisdiction.

Fay McCormack Eshleman, Traffic Safety Resource coordinator, and Lieutenant Matt Myers, Drug Recognition Expert/SFST instructor from the Peachtree City Police Department will teach the course.

“It's really good training. We are looking forward to hosting it,” Bright said.

For more information, contact Debbie Brown or Marci Hill at the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia at (404) 969-4001 or visit www.pacga.org for additional training information.

The Joint Law Enforcement and Prosecutor DUI Training Course is made possible through a grant from the GOHS.
