Old Governor’s Mansion hosts lecture on lost antebellum homes

MILLEDGEVILLE — Ghosts from the past will come back to life as writer Michael W. Kitchens explores the lost architecture from the 1800s.

Kitchens will speak about his book “Ghosts of Grandeur: Georgia’s Lost Antebellum Homes and Plantations” at the Old Governor’s Mansion at 6 p.m. Thursday.

“The book focuses on historic architecture from homes around the state that no longer exist,” said Matt Davis, curator at the Old Governor’s Mansion. “Lovers of history and architecture will learn a great deal about design and ways of life from that time period.”

Filled with photos and a detailed descriptions of the buildings, the book takes a look at lost structures across the state from Savannah to Columbus and all the way up to the north Georgia mountains.

It includes notable homes in Baldwin County like Mount Nebo and Westover Plantations.

“Visitors will be able to learn about those lost treasures and see photos of the beautiful homes and plantations that once graced our state,” said Davis.

As part of the mansion’s annual lecture series, the lecture will take place in the education building on the Old Governor’s Mansion grounds. A question and answer session with the author and reception will follow.

The event is free and open to the public.

For more information on the event or to schedule a tour, contact the Old Governor’s Mansion at 478-445-4545.
