MILLEDGEVILLE — Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and other local public safety agencies responded to a call around 8 a.m. Monday in reference to an alleged explosive device at Baldwin High School. School Resource Officer Deputy Jason Simmons was immediately contacted and placed the school under lockdown.
“Units responded and secured the perimeter, did a thorough search of the building and no device was found, and nobody was harmed. Around 9:30 a.m., classes resumed after we made sure it was safe,” said Lt. Michael Lumpkin of the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office. “We had a variety of law enforcement agencies respond, but the sheriff’s office took the lead. We requested assistance from Georgia State Patrol, Milledgeville Police Department and Georgia College.”
The case is still under investigation and no arrests have been made.
“In this case, it would be [some one at least 17 years-old] so this crime would be treated as an adult charge given the nature of the crime, which is terroristic attack. It would also be a charge of disruption in school, which is a misdemeanor,” Lumpkin said. “Terroristic threats and acts is a felony charge. If a person is found guilty, the fine would be set by a superior court judge. They could be looking at a fine to probation or imprisonment.”
Baldwin High also experienced a bomb threat situation in late March last year. School officials followed evacuation procedures, and no explosive devices or materials were found on campus after local agencies did a complete physical search. The perpetrator in the case has yet to be found.
“In today’s time, this is a very serious incident, and it will be treated and taken as such,” Lumpkin said. “The public safety response was fantastic. We showed that we are going to protect our students in these schools.”
