Milledgeville gets ready for Black History Month

MILLEDGEVILLE — Several schools, businesses and organizations around Baldwin County will present special programs and events to the community in honor of Black History Month. The Milledgeville Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is offering free African-American historic trolley tours this month designed to highlight the African-American heritage of Milledgeville.

“We have this tour every year and we consider it a privilege to share with everyone the rich African-American culture of Milledgeville,” said Tour Coordinator Linda Bailey.

The tour offers an inside perspective on the influential local African-Americans who have had an impact on the development of Baldwin County.

"While on the tour, you'll hear about Wilkes Flagg, a prominent leader in the black community of Milledgeville who purchased his own freedom and organized Flagg Chapel Baptist Church," said CVB Executive Director Jane Sowell.

This year's trolley tour will also include a tour of the Sallie Ellis Davis House, which opened to the public after a historic restoration in April 2012. The house was the historic home to the Milledgeville educator which she opened up to student boarders who would have otherwise not have been able to attend school due to long distances from the town.

Sandra Jones, tour guide, along with driver Fannie Robinson, will point out many important historical spots that have proved to be fundamental in the growth of the city.

"Sandra and Fannie have been doing this tour for years and we truly appreciate all their hard work and the amount of time and effort they put into educating everyone about the history of Milledgeville," Bailey said.

The trolley tour is from 2 to 4 p.m. and is on a first-come, first-serve basis. It will leave from the CVB office at 200 W. Hancock St. You are sure to learn something that you never knew about the Antebellum Capital known as Milledgeville.

"We truly are a unique city with incredibly influential people throughout our past and present,” Bailey said.
