Baldwin County under tornado watch

ATLANTA — A tornado watch is in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday with a wind advisory in effect until midnight tonight for Baldwin and Wilkinson counties.

The rest of the day is expected to be windy with a 90 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the early afternoon. Near steady temperature in the lower 70s with south winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts to around 40 mph.

Forecasters say a storm system over Georgia is bringing the threat of widespread damaging winds and isolated tornadoes to the state.

The National Weather Service early Wednesday morning issued a tornado watch for nine counties in northwest Georgia through 1 p.m. Wednesday. It included the cities of Calhoun, Carrollton, Cartersville, Dallas, Rome and Summerville.

The weather service issued a tornado warning for parts of five counties in northwest Georgia after a funnel cloud was spotted by law enforcement in a storm southwest of Kingston around 11 a.m. Wednesday. An emergency manager reports that a tree fell on a house in Rome, though there were no immediate reports of any injuries.

Earlier, high winds brought down power lines south of Summerville, the emergency manager in Chattooga County reported.

The line of storms was expected to track through the Atlanta metro area by mid-afternoon Wednesday.
