MILLEDGEVILLE — The City of Milledgeville now requires business owners to complete two affidavits in order to file for a renewal of their occupation tax certificate for 2013.
“Two of three enclosed affidavits must be returned to us, pursuant to your current business status. This is the second process this year to the filing of your 2013 occupation tax renewal,” said Patti Rushin of the city finance department. “The Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act of 2011 was passed by the Georgia General Assembly effective July 1, 2011. This new law requires that each applicant for an occupational tax certificate provide two of three affidavits, completed, signed and notarized.”
In order to conduct business within the city of Milledgeville, renewals must be paid by March 22. Nearly 1,000 renewal notices were sent out earlier this week.
“Once the renewal notice arrives in the mail, you should check all information on the printed form and make any changes in the area provided, enter your gross receipts as of Dec. 31, 2012, enter your E-Verify number if applicable, sign and date the renewal notice, and return it back to us,” Rushin said. “Once we receive your completed renewal notice, we will enter the information provided and generate an invoice, which will be returned to you immediately either via mail, fax or e-mail. From that invoice you pay.”
All businesses are required to verify their U.S. citizenship status. Employers with 11 or more employees must utilize the federal work authorization program, or commonly known as E-Verify, to verify each employee’s eligibility for employment in the U.S. Employers with 10 or fewer employees must complete the affidavit affirming their exemption from registering with E-Verify. Visit the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) website to obtain an E-Verify number.
“Information provided by you on the City of Milledgeville occupation tax application or renewal will be provided to the Georgia Department of Revenue,” Rushin said. “Additionally, notification will be given to the DOR of refusal to provide all or part of the information required. Remember, all returned affidavits must be signed in the presence of a notary public.”
By March 26, all occupation tax licenses must be displayed at each place of business.
“After the March 22 deadline, we will send out past due notices and a 10 percent penalty will be affixed,” Rushin said. “Then they are given 30 days to take care of it, and after that code enforcement is given a list of those who have not complied and they will be cited.”
Occupation tax certificate renewals can be paid in person at the finance office in City Hall, located at 119 E. Hancock St., between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Bills can also be dropped in the drop box located beside the drive-thru window, or e-mailed to prushin@milledgevillega.us or chightower@milledgevillega.us. Another option is to mail payments to P.O. Box 1900, Milledgeville, Ga. 31059, or fax it to (478) 414-4011.
“We really encourage e-mailing,” Rushin said. “We used it last year for the first time and it was more reliable and quicker.”
