City police named champs of Chili Eating Contest

MILLEDGEVILLE — Milledgeville Main Street hosted a chili cook-off event and a Chili Eating Contest during the January First Friday. The Chili in Milly cook-off offered chili samples from 12 participating downtown businesses, both restaurant and retail included.

Two awards were given during the event, the People's Choice award and the overall Best Chili award.

The judging panel consisted of Mayor Richard Bentley, City Manager Barry Jarrett, Police Chief Dray Swicord, along with two certified chili cook-off judges, Randy and Deborah Gilman.

The winner of the 2013 Best Chili award went to The Lemon Tree.

Community members were able to buy people's choice tickets for $1 each and sample participating business's chili and then vote for their favorite. The People's Choice award went to Amici.

Three-man teams from City police and fire departments squared off in a Chili Eating Contest at Digital Bridges as well. The Velvet Elvis supplied the competition bowls of chili. Each team had nine minutes and 11 seconds to eat as much chili as possible. The police department downed four more bowls than the firemen. Police representative Michael Hudson was the individual winner, eating eight bowls.

Money raised from ticket sales goes to the continuation of First Fridays.
