Mullins sentenced for stabbing

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Baldwin County Sheriff's deputies arrested Barry Mullins, 48, in February for a stabbing on Moran Springs Road.

Wednesday, Mullins was convicted of aggravated assault related to the case. He will serve 10 years in prison and 10 on probation.

The victim had a change of heart during the trial. Butts switched her feelings, saying that the stabbing was an accident and Mullins didn't mean to do it, according to those involved in the prosecution of the case.

Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney DeLeigh Shelton said the victim’s 16-year-old daughter made the difference in the case.

“The daughter said she witnessed everything. This was finally having a victim in a case we could place in front of the jury. It's been a long time coming,” Shelton said.

The day of the stabbing Mullins came home and argued with the victim over money. He stabbed her once in chest and the arm.

Following the stabbing, the victim screamed for her 16-year-old daughter to help.

The daughter tried to pull Mullins off. He threw her back into the bedpost.

The daughter drove the victim to the hospital for treatment of the chest wound.

While on the scene, deputies collected physical evidence and started looking for Mullins. Deputies obtained warrants for Mullins on charges of aggravated assault, battery and cruelty to children.

Following the incident, Mullins called Capt. Brad King of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office several times threatening to overdose on cocaine and kill himself. The phone conversations continued off and on for two hours.

Mullins, who has a criminal history of arrests for violence against women, was arrested and treated at Oconee Regional Medical Center before being booked at the Baldwin County Jail.

In 2006, Mullins was charged with rape and found not guilty. He pleaded guilty with criminal intent to commit rape in 2009.

“It was a big win to get the jury to care that it happened,” Shelton said. “We finally had a jury that listened.”
