First Friday raises funds for Empty Stocking Fund

MILLEDGEVILLE —

The First Friday Committee, Young Professionals of Milledgeville and Z97 FM teamed up to provide a charity benefit concert with proceeds going to the Empty Stocking Fund at the November First Friday event.

“The Scott Little Band” provided some amazing country and southern rock tunes to the public. Attendees were asked to bring a $5 donation or five canned goods for entry. There was also a raffle for a basket of downtown goodies.

Main Street is pleased to announce that this event raised $285 cash and three bins of canned goods for the Empty Stocking Fund. The Empty Stocking Fund, organized by Randy New of Baynes Army Store, is a charitable organization in which 100 percent of the donations go to feed needy families during the holiday season.

Randy New was very happy with the donation.

“The $285 is enough to feed 15 families and then more when taking into account the canned goods,” New said.

Congratulations to Teresa Jones who was the winner of the raffle basket holding plenty of goodies from downtown merchants and T-shirts from downtown events, including the new First Friday T-shirt.

During intermission, The Hands on Milledgeville Awards were also announced. These annual awards go to individuals and groups that have shown exemplary service throughout the past year.

The following are the 2012 Hands On Milledgeville annual award winners:

• 2012 Youth Volunteer of the Year — Barrett Roell

• 2012 Volunteer of the Year — Laura Thompson

• 2012 Youth Volunteer Group of the Year — Gamma Sigma Sigma, a national service sorority

• 2012 Volunteer Group of the Year — Oconee Regional Medical Center Auxiliary

• 2012 Volunteer Administrator of the Year — Paula Barnes

Main Street’s vision for downtown Milledgeville is for it to be a vibrant center of business, education and community activity where people appreciate its rich history. Georgia was one of six pilot states to be inducted in the Main Street Four-Point Approach program in 1980.

Main Street thanks everyone who came to the event and enjoyed downtown Milledgeville. The next First Friday event will be held on December 7 and is sure to be a good time.
